Spite?

January 5, 2009 – 4:20 pm

I’m really not sure what is going on with my son. I think he gets some sick pleasure out of rooting for the opposite team that I am rooting for. I mentioned a few months ago that he is a Giants fan, which is like a knife through the heart.

During wildcard playoff weekend, for nearly every game we had a conversation like this:

Him: Who’s playing this game?
Me: [Team A] vs. [Team B]
Him: Who do you want to win?
Me: [Team A]
Him (grinning):  [Team B]

He wouldn’t just disagree with me and walk away. He would stick around and actively root against the team that I was rooting for.

Isn’t there supposed to be some natural bond that forms between fathers and sons while cheering for the same team? Instead, I have a son who enjoys seeing the pained expression on my face when he purposefully chooses the “other” team.

  1. 3 Responses to “Spite?”

  2. Introduce him to the term, “Psych!” And start rooting for that team. On the downside, he may truly reveal how much he wants to piss you off by reversing his pick, too. 8-)
